My silly high at finding myself in a reference work has been replaced by a silly high of being an actual part of a major bit of fandom wank.

I got my first flame review and I had to giggle all the way through. No, I'm not a masochist, I just know who left it and why and abundant stupidity has great humor potential.

At FOAF, the About Urban Legends and Folklore social forum, a troll named Victor followed a friend of mine in from another forum via a link in her profile and proceeded to spam us with a message in pretty much every active thread plus a couple of new threads he started for the purpose. The posts were mostly slams against the upper class for reasons known only to his therapist.

We did what any intelligent group would do and pointed and laughed until the mod made him go away. Deprived of this outlet he followed a link in my sig to my FF.Net account and left the following review last night. I would like to point out that it's a 79 word response to a 100 word drabble so apparently he was inspired. Not inspired enough to actually sign his name to it so he has plausible deniability, but it's pretty obviously him and that means I REALLY got to him in my posts at FOAF.

Well, that sucked. First off, your grammar/punctuation is atrocious, even for
a drabble. It's especially sad when you can't make your drabbles grammatically
flawless. A thing that small?? Come on.

The storyline itself is tedious and boring. In fact, there's no storyline at
all. Can you say "cliché?" Because that's what this is. And it's not the
well-pulled-off kind of cliché either.

With drabbles, it's a hit and miss, and you missed that hole badly. Try
again.

I wonder if he's going to make a stab at the Tanka? He obviously didn't know that much about drabbles it should be fun to see what he makes of it.

If this were a real review I'd love feedback on any grammar or punctuation errors but then he'd have to actually leave something constructive and that would defeat the purpose.

It's Over?

Live Journal says it will restore the fan fic communities:

http://news.livejournal.com/99515.html

In a few weeks this will be old news to most people and it will be back to business as usual. Until the next time. Maybe that won't be here at LJ but there will be a next time and we need to remember that.

I am proud of how quickly fandom rallied together and how many voices of reason there were. If nothing else we may finally know how strong our presence is here via the [profile] fandom_counts project. If you haven't already,  and you have a blog that deals with fandom even if only occasionally, go join so they can add you to the count.

The Inquirer (No not that one) points out "[I]f you want a community that burns books, does not like science fiction, suppresses talk about sexuality, or anything that departs from a norm defined by a US pressure group, then Live Journal is the place for you."

Firefox News has an article about the backlash

and a nice column by Leva Cygnet exploring the implications.

Slashdot has posted a short blurb.

ETA:
And this just in

http://news.livejournal.com/99159.html

Live Journal's CEO posted a public apology over night and promises an individual review of the suspended accounts and a restoration of those that were hit by mistake.

There are already 47 PAGES of responses at 6:58am and he posted at 12:47am.

As one blogger put it they realized "Oh no! We've pissed off our CUSTOMERS!"

Still, the whole thing was not the First Amendment's best day and I expect to see fall out for some time to come, especially if other sites get targeted by the Warriors.
