Series: Hikaru no Go:
Title: In the Forests of the Night

Summary: Nearly a thousand years ago, Fujiwara no Sai died for the love of a game. But pasts don't always stay in the past, and even ghosts can be haunted too ... as Hikaru is about to find out.

Reason to read: The author does an excellent job of making use of both Japanese myth and European traditions of story telling to create this story about a Setsubon night festival held by the lord of the kitsune. I think a novice to the series could follow this one without too much trouble. With all the stories that focus on the mundane aspects of Hikaru's life it's fun to find one that focuses on the supernatural elements inherent in a story about a boy who is mentored by a ghost.

Series: The A Team, Lilo and Stich
Title: Down at the End of Lonely Street

Summary:Set just after "Wheel of Fortune." Murdock's vacation in Hawaii isn't quite what he anticipated. With crossover guest star.

Reason to read: Lilo and Murdock are soul mates! You don't have to remember the Wheel of Fortune episode of The A Team (I didn't) to follow this. It's just an excuse for Murdock to be in Hawaii without the rest of the team. This is set before the first Lilo and Stitch movie or else I'd feel cheated by not getting to see Cobra Bubbles and B.A. interact. Murdoch is a character that I had completely forgotten and even when the actor who played him popped up on Star Trek: Next Gen playing Ensign Barclay I never even recognized him. This reminded me of how much I liked him when I wasn't distracted by Face and B.A.

 

Series: Good Omens

Title: An Interview with the Angel and Demon

Reason to read: This is hilarious. The author uses questions from a meme that was going around to interview Crowley and Aziraphale. It IS slash and several jokes depend on that but I'll be surprised if it squicks any of my regular readers.

 

Series: YuYu Hakusho
Title: The Suitability of Suitors

Summary: Shiori's love life has left much to be desired, and it's all her son's fault. Kurama feels justified. Hiei is amused. Shiori's dates are not. Genfic, vaguely HK if you use your jagan.

Reason to read: A frequently funny look at Kurama's relationship with his mother that explains a LOT. Not recommended for non-fans as you need a familiarity with the series to follow the story.

 

Series: Discworld
Title: Going Away

Summary: Nanny Ogg dies and now Granny has a promise to keep.

Reason to read: Excellent characterization and use of canon elements. I really could see things happening this way. Cameos by all the witches and a few other magical folks added to the fun. Another one for the fans though. If you haven't read any of the stories about Nanny, Granny, or Tiffany save this until you do.

 

Series: Um...Disney in general.
Title: Inside Every Princess is an Evil Queen

Summary: AU and crossover. Maleficent is depressed about the state of villains in the Magic Kingdom. Princess Aurora is depressed with her lack of a roll as a heroine. The two find that perhaps the answer to their problems will come with the simple act of change.

Reason to read: The characterization of Maleficent is outstanding and don't you want to see what a dinner party with many of the Disney villains would be like?

 

Series: Cowboy Bebop
Title: Growing Pains

Summary: Ed's got her first period! Except she doesn’t know what that means and Spike's not much better. He's on his own, can he survive this with his sanity intact?

Reason to read: The way the story combines pure crack with elements that are just too real life. Probably not a fic for the men in the audience. Non-fans could follow it because so much of it is based on universal human experience but will miss a number of the jokes. I'd think even just seeing the movie would be enough to get you up to speed though.

Don't worry, nobody is remotely grown up in that one with the possible exception of Ein.
