I've spent a lot of time this week reading the best fan comic I've ever seen. It's a major multi-crossover with Phantom of the Opera, Labyrinth, Pirates of the Caribbean, Les Miserables, Lord of the Rings, Hellboy, Good Omens, The Wizard of Oz, Sweeney Todd, Heroes, and pretty near anything else that's cool and fun as it strikes the creators' fancy.

The central premise is that there is an apartment complex where fictional characters live where Eric (The Phantom of the Opera) and Jareth (The Goblin King) are roommates. Directly downstairs is the apartment where the objects of their obsession, Christine Daae and Sarah live. Regularly appearing neighbors are Commodore Noringtom, Inspector Javert, Aziraphale, and Crowley.

Title: Used Souls
Author: ColorOfAngels

Summary: Spike just wants to go to bed, but Buffy can't sleep with one of life's great mysteries on her mind... Just a bit of slice of life fluff and fun..

Where do souls come from? Is the one that Spike got his old one? A new one? A retread? Why IS Spike pretty much the same guy with or without but Angel not? All of these deep questions are pondered in a surprisingly funny one shot.

Title: The Prize
Author: Thesseli

Summary: A mysterious stranger helps Edmund begin a new life. A crossover.

It's so very wrong and so very right! It's set after the end of the final episode of the first season of Blackadder and puts a completely new spin on Edmund through the ages. Unfortunately it's a one shot so we can only imagine how the rest of the series would have gone with this one tiny divergence.

Okay, I can either wait to have the time and energy to figure out another post with stories grouped by theme or fandom and keep putting off posting until my "To be rec'd" subdirectory of book marks mutates into a sentient life form and starts posting its own blog OR I can just give you guys some potluck posts for a while until I get caught up.

Option two it is then. Look for me to post mostly one or two at a time becusae I need to work my way through the folder and re-read enough to remember what to say.

After all the drama how about some actual content around here?

From comedy to serious angst... )
ranuel: (Pimp'n Malfoy)

This time the stories all are things I wish were cannon, but aren't. Pure "scenes we'd like to see" wish fulfillment. None of these are really for non-fans of the series they are based on although there is a lot of universal human drama in them.

Title: Chosei
Author: Aishuu / Deva-esque
Fandom: Hikaru no Go
Summary: Ichikawa watched a game between Touya and Shindou.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2294007/1/Chosei

Go is an ancient Japanese board game that is simple to learn and hard to master. Hikaru no Go (Hikaru's Go) tells how 12-year-old Hikaru Shindou finds an old Go board (a goban) possessed by the spirit of Sai, a Heien era master, and goes from thinking Go is a boring game old men play to becoming an internationally ranked professional player within a few years under Sai's teaching. He is motivated by a rivalry with Akira Touya, a boy his own age who is the best player of his generation.

In this story they are 16 and have settled into the habit of a weekly match at the Go salon managed by Ichikawa. I've only read the first four volumes of the manga and the chapters published in the past year in Shonen Jump but from what I've seen Ichikawa is alone in treating Akira as a kid first and a Go prodigy second. During the course of an afternoon's play she watches, and watches over, the boys and thinks about their rivalry, their friendship, and what the future might hold for them. It's pretty faithful to canon so if you haven't read the series before this could be a good sampler to decide if you might like it and if you are already a fan you should enjoy it.

Title Seance de Go
Author: Aishuu / Deva-esque
Fandom: Hikaru no Go
Summary: A stormy night, a game between Hikaru and Akira, as promises are finally fulfilled and made. Not romance.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/2295997/1/Seance_de_Go

Hikaru shows up one stormy afternoon to let Akira know that he won't be able to make their weekly game the next day.  They decide to go ahead and play while they wait for the storm to pass and during the game Hikaru finally reveals the secret of Sai's identity. The whole Go world had been trying to guess for years who the mysterious online player with the handle "Sai" was but Akira learns an even bigger secret when the game is over. This is a very good character piece examining the friendship and rivalry between these two with an ending that made me cry.

Title: House of Cards
Author: Aishuu / Deva-esque (The author uses both names)
Fandom: Card Captor Sakura
Pairing: Touya/Yuki
Summary: Touya teaches Yukito how to play poker. It's a move he sometimes regrets, especially during their class' final field trip in their senior year.
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3243677/1/House_of_Cards

Touya and Yuki are 80% of why I like CCS and despite tons of slash out there for non-canon couples in every fandom this canon pair just doesn't get enough love from fanfic writers and when they do it's often not very good. I went looking and got lucky enough to find two great stories. This is a sweet bit of fluff with a discrete fade at the end but just a hug with a promise of more is better with these two in character than a pointless lemon. Probably not for those who aren't familiar with the series.

Title: Proof of Identity
Author Madhumalati
Fandom: Card Captor Sakura
Pairing Touya/Yuki
Summary: The simplest things gain significance when everything you thought was true...wasn't and letting go can be harder than it seems. TYY, implied shounenai
Link: http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3431456/1/Proof_of_identity

It's hard enough to figure out who you are if you are a normal teenager but Yuki has to deal with finding out that he is the construct of a construct. This vignette avoids heaping on the angst in an inherently angsty situation and has excellent characterization of both Yuki and Touya. A non-fan could probably enjoy it without getting lost.

For those unfamiliar with CCS the sorcerer Clow Reed created a magical being named Yue to serve as one of the guardians of a deck of living cards he was creating. After Clow's death the cards were dormant but when the time came near for his heir to awaken them Yue created the form of Yukito, a human teenager, and gave him false memories so he could lead a normal life. He then placed himself within Yuki so he could be near Sakura, the one who was destined to receive the cards. In the course of the story Yue awakens but Yuki continues to exist. It's not quite possession and not quite multiple personality and when Yuki learns the truth figuring out what is real isn't easy.
